The Navigli tell the story of a Milan of water that survives among the canals, the balcony-access houses and the waterfront bars. Here's a walking itinerary that starts from Porta Genova and takes in the district's must-sees.
Morning: the Naviglio Grande
Start at the Naviglio Grande, the most famous canal. Stroll along the towpath, taking in the craft workshops, the art galleries and the old Milanese houses. It's the best time to photograph the reflections on the water before the crowds arrive.
The Vicolo dei Lavandai
Nearby you'll find the Vicolo dei Lavandai, one of the most picturesque corners of Milan: this is where washerwomen once rinsed their laundry in the canal water. The old covered wash-house is still perfectly preserved.
Afternoon: the Darsena and the market
Continue towards the Darsena, Milan's former harbour, redeveloped for Expo 2015. Today it's a lively promenade with bars, benches by the water and the covered market, ideal for a food break.
Evening: aperitivo on the canal
End the day with the classic Milanese aperitivo in one of the many bars that liven up the waterfront at sunset. It's the ritual that best captures the spirit of the neighbourhood.
The whole itinerary is comfortably walkable starting from Porta Genova. Allow a full day if you want to enjoy each stop at a relaxed pace, breaks included.
