A short walk from Porta Genova is the Tortona District, one of Milan's most creative areas. A former industrial zone, today it's a concentration of design studios, showrooms, exhibition spaces and fashion ateliers.
What to see all year round
Even outside the big events, Via Tortona and the surrounding streets host permanent showrooms, photography galleries and spaces such as the former factories converted into creative hubs. It's a pleasant walk for anyone who loves reclaimed industrial architecture and contemporary design.
The Fuorisalone and Design Week
During Milan Design Week (in April, alongside the Salone del Mobile), the Tortona District becomes one of the epicentres of the Fuorisalone: installations, exhibitions, events and launches enliven every corner of the area. It's the most intense and fascinating time to visit, but also the busiest: it's worth booking accommodation well in advance.
How to get there from Porta Genova
The Tortona District is reachable on foot in about ten minutes from Porta Genova, crossing the station's characteristic pedestrian underpass. This proximity makes the neighbourhood a strategic base for anyone visiting Milan during Design Week.
During the Fuorisalone, accommodation in the area sells out quickly and rates rise. Book months in advance to secure a room near Tortona.
